BCBP Capability Hits 70% Worldwide
July 30, 2009
The number of bar coded boarding passes (BCBP) continues to increase, with
global capability hitting 70% in July. The increase is due to the
rapid ramp-up of BCBP use by United Airlines and US Airways.
"The speed of adoption by these two major US carriers is remarkable," said
Eric Leopold, BCBP Project Manager. "Once they achieved BCBP
capability, both carriers were able to roll it out rapidly across their
extensive route networks, saving money and providing more convenient service
to their passengers."
The significant industry progress on BCBP this year shows the value of the
project in difficult times. It also highlights the network effect of
BCBP adoption - the higher the BCBP capability, the more an airline, airport
or ground handler can adopt a single, efficient way of working across its
operations.
Having met their 2009 Board target last month, the BCBP team is now focusing
on the 2010 board mandate of 100% BCBP. The project is currently
engaging all airlines and airports who have yet to submit a plan for 100%
BCBP to IATA.
